Termite Control & Proofing

[cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Termite”]

Termites are social insects, live in a highly organized colony consist of different casts that perform distinctly different duties. There are 4 casts King & Queen, reproductive, Soldiers, and Workers, termites communicate in the form of chemical message (trophallaxis) among them.

  1. termiteThe Queen & King :They live in nest and mate time to time, queen produce eggs up to 70,000 daily.
  2. Reproductive: dark color have wings as adult called swarmer fly from home nest and form new colony.
  3. Soldiers: light color with large head they responsible to protect colony by ants & others.
  4. Workers:cream color, soft body & blind, the numerous cast in termite colony and responsible to feed all colony,

The susceptibility of termites in buildings have become a crucial part to control due to its invisibility, it accounts 10 times more damages than fire in a year throughout the world, as a result some developed municipalities’ have taken step to imposed control treatment as a law in early phase of building construction to minimize the risks of termite damages.

    • There are three most common and damaging kinds of termite species are the subterranean, formosan, & drywood termite.
    • The subterranean termite is considered to be the most damaging kind of pest caused Billion of $ damages annually.
    • Termites are social insect live in colonies and build their nests in soil and feed wood.
    • There are 4 casts, the queen & king, reproductive, soldiers & workers, Queen breed and lay thousands of eggs daily
    • The most damaging & populous cast in colony are the worker termites, it may be up to several millions in a colony, soldiers less than workers, after reproductive and just one King & Queen.
    • Workers responsible to forage food and produce to all colony, they form multiple nests and tunnels between the colony and feeding sites like buildings, timber, trees, grains etc.
    • Termite workers & soldiers are blind, soldiers protect colonies by warning signals as detect any danger comes to nest and tunnel paths through bang their heads.
    • Termites communicate each other by leave pheromones chemical message, when they find any source of food or any threat.
    • Reproductive have wings called alates (Swarm) when adult leave colony and fly out in search of mate and form new colony.

  • Mud tubes along wall, roof and outside peripheral wall of building
  • Swarmer termites fly from building, it looks like wing ants,
  • The appearance of dampness in kitchen or toilet areas at wall junction points.
  • The inside of the wood may hollow with dried mud or soil along the tunnels.

Foundation stage treatment

A horizontal chemical barrier should be established at early foundation stage to avoid termite infestation in future, this process apply as termiticde showering into foundation surface & walls of pits because  termite worker can gain access into building from foundation pillars, treated soil around pillars act as barrier as termite touches they got killed and followers termite turn move from access into building structure.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Plinth Level (Sub-Flooring Stage)”]

The 2nd stage of liquid termiticide solution should be treated when earth back fillings, compaction and watering have been completed to further protect building structure from termite infestation in future, but termiticide solution should be applied inside all the areas including sewerage lines and outside peripheral of building structure.

The 3rd stage is that all wooden fixtures (door & window frames, false ceiling, paneling etc.) should be treated with the chemical solution to further prevention from termite damages. This treatment work as triple check one in the soil & second one filling of the cracks and third one on the wooden fixtures.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Post-Construction Termite Control & Proofing”]

Post-construction termite control process is required on the following

  • Pre-construction termite control process has been expired
  • The signs of termite infestation has observed
  • As Preventive measure to protect property
[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Drilling Process (vertical chemical barrier)”]

pest6A vertical chemical barrier establish at ground floor by drilling holes 1 to 1.5 feet deep with distance of 2 to 4 feet in the floor to inject the termiticide solution in each hole, as solution reach at one hole surface and spread out to meet another hole solution to form an underground barrier around building to prevent from termite access into building for lasting period.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Wooden Floor Treatment”]

pest7In case of wooden floor a termiticide lacquer apply at the corners, junction of wall and the floor, moreover  any crack or crevices fill with past mix termiticide with adhesive material.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Lacquer Treatment”]

pest8All cracks in the floor & along the walls fill with special binding agent made with termiticide, to avoid termites to getting into the building. This technique will be used as spot treatment and only be applied area where the termite movement is seen in the middle of the walls. That area will be scratched to see the extent of termite movement then followed with the application of termiticide.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Concealed Wiring Treatment”]

pest9In most of the cases, termites travel in between the colony and the building through electricity wiring. To check the movement, an oil-based solution is poured in all sockets and followed with the filling or clogging of the holes with cotton swab dipped in concentrated termiticide.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Dusting”]

The dusting technique is applied under the carpets along the walls, in cracks & crevices. The dust clings to the surfaces and wooden surfaces that remains affective there until it is physically removed from the surface and if removed there should be reapplication.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Termite Control Dusting Treatment”]

The dusting termite control process is used in both pre-construction & post-construction termite control treatments as same as liquid barrier but in dusting is powder based termiticide use to prevent from termite infestation.

Dust apply into foundation pits, plinth, and peripheral wall by preparing the solution through powder dust mix in water and shower into foundation trenches.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Precautions”]
  • Examine time to time any mud tubes, swarmers, moisture stains close to bathroom & kitchen, or damaged wood.
  • Prevent building from associated moisture issues and ensure that water drains away from the building.
  • Ensure the plants, mulch and landscape should away from the exterior wall of building.
  • Remove unnecessary wood to soil contacts which may include wood piles, wood siding, support beams, and any other structural timbers in building.
[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Procedure of Termite Control”]

At the level of earth back filling after compaction, the active ingredient absorb into soil at above level of surface or foundation pits to become a part of soil and water further absorb into deep soil.

In post construction dust application process is little difficult, initially find out termite colony base and then apply dust into the associated area of colony that easily spread out dust in colony and queen.

[/cws-widget][/col][/cws-row][cws-row cols=1 id=”cols1″][col span=12][cws-widget type=text title=”Termite Control Baiting System”]

The advance and latest technique is termite control baiting devices using non detectable and slow poison chemicals blend with cellulous that attract termite and spread out into the whole colony, as a result complete termite colony is eliminated.

Termite control baiting devices are generally installed both above and under the ground, after installation it is required monitoring the termite activity may have taken place, monitoring must be carried out for 6 to 12 months in the termite baiting systems as contract basis and renewed for extended period at additional cost.

There are many limitations to install this system because continuous monitoring and this is not essential that all termites may come to baiting devices so that’s why this system couldn’t have gain market success.

pest00

Termite control baiting devices are not available in Pakistan, recently Sumitomo the Japanese company launched but still unavailable in market.

The world’s well known baiting systems including Sentricon, Exterra, Nemsis and many more are available in global market.
